This was the current status of some of the Rotor stations as of 1981 Interesting reading the Cold war was still very Much in force.
ROTOR GROUND CONTROL INTERCEPT (GCI) STATIONS
ANSTRUTHER NO 568 088 R3 BUNGALOW TYPE 80 2 LEVEL
The site is now used as the Scottish Northern Zone Control. All original radar buildings remain on the site
although all radar scanners have been removed. The type 80 building has been converted to a generating
plant with exhausts visible on the structure. There are also the remains of the Chain Home station on the situ.
All above ground buildings have been maintained in very good condition. There are two aerial masts located
on the site with an additional smaller mast for the emergency UHF aerial.
BUCHAN NK 113 408 R3 BUNGALOW TYPE 80 2 LEVEL
The site is still an R.A.F. radar station although it has been extensively enlarged since the 1950’s.
BOULMER NU 239 124 R3 BUNGALOW TYPE 80 2 LEVEL
The site is still an R.A.F. radar station although it has been extensively enlarged since the 1950’s
SEATON SNOOK NZ 519280 R3 BUNGALOW TYPE 80 2 LEVEL
The site is now privately owned and is used by a construction company. The bungalow is now a complete ruin
with all Windows and doors open and the roof missing. The main air vent appears to have been demolished,
and the type 80 Radar building has been converted into a snack bar for the site workers. All other radar buildings
appear to have bean demolished. Access to the underground bunker may be possible through the ruined bungalow.
PATRINGTON TA 367 225 R3 BUNGALOW TYPE 80 2 LEVEL
The site is no longer an R.A.F. radar station although it is still maintained by the R.A.F. who have a caretaker on
the site. All radar scanners have been dismantled, and only the radar buildings remain. The bungalow and other
surface buildings have been maintained in vary good condition. The purpose for retaining the site is at present unknown.
HARTLAND POINT SS 238 274 SURFACE BUILDING
The site is still an R.A.F. radar station. The main operations’ building is the same as at R.A.F. Chenies. SURFACE
ST ATHAN
The R.A.F. maintain a large airfield at St Athan, but no trace could be found of the radar site. Presume site has
been completely dismantled and removed.
ST TWYNELLS SR 944 976 R6 SEMI SUNK TYPE 80 2 LEVEL
The site was closed as an R.A.F. radar station during the early 1960’s, and is now completely derelict.
A mini - Bungalow guardhouse is positioned by the road, which is also derelict. Access is possible to both
the blockhouse and the mini - bungalow which are on one aide of the road, and the type 60 building on the other.
The condition of the blockhouse is very good, and still contains floorboards (unlike Langtoft). An R.O.C.
post is also on the site and is still operational.
HACK GREEN SJ 647 483 R6 SEMI SUNK 2 LEVEL
The site was closed as an R.A.F. radar station during the early 1960’s. Within the last few years a high
fence has been erected around the blockhouse, and the entrance to the structure has been bricked up to stop
access. This may suggest that the site has been squired by the Home Office and is awaiting conversion to an S.R.H.Q.
The mini - bungalow guardhouse has been completely demolished.
GAILES NS 327 361 R8 SURFACE
The site appears to have been transferred from the R.A.F. to the C.A.A. and is still maintained as a radar station.
SCARINISH (TIREE) NM032456 R8 SURFACE
The site was closed as an R.A.F. radar station during the early 1960’s. Presume the site is now derelict, or forms
part of the R.A.F. airfield buildings on Tiree - Site not inspected.
ROTOR CHAIN HOME EXTRA LOW (C.H.E.L)
CROSSLAW NT 880 680 R3 BUNGALOW
The site is no longer an R.A.F. radar station, and appears to be used by the Civil Aviation Authority as an
aircraft navigational facility. Two facilities are provided - NDB & VOR and both operate under the call sign SAB (St Abbs).
The CAA only maintains the bungalow site, the underground section is presumed derelict. Access is possible to the
main air vent, although the stairs are missing. And through two manhole shafts as at Hopton)
GOLDSBOROUGH NZ 830138 R3 BUNGALOW 1 LEVEL
Site closed as RAF radar station and is now run as the Minsthorpe Outdoor Leisure Centre, operating during the
summer months only. It is uncertain if the underground section is in use, the roof of the Bungalow has recently been re-tiled.
The air vents have been demolished.
HOPTON TM 540 990 R3 BUNGALOW 1 LEVEL
The site is no longer an R.A.F. radar station and is now derelict. It appears that the Home Office was using
the site during the late 1960’s (possibly as an S.R.C.), but since then the site has fallen into disrepair. When
first visited in 1979 the bungalow was in fair condition, but now (1981) has been vandalized, and is a complete ruin.
The land now belongs to the farm nearby, and access is possible with permission. An abandoned R.O.C. post is also on the site.
FORENESS TR 384 714 R3 BUNGALOW 1 LEVEL
The site has been completely demolished. All that remains are a few scattered bricks where the bungalow once stood.
There is no access to the underground section. Site positioned beside the existing Coastguard Station.
FAIRLIGHT TQ 862 113 R3 BUNGALOW 1 LEVEL
The site has been completely demolished. There is no access to the underground section ~a far as is known.
The site was positioned beside the existing Coastguard Station were there is an underground R.O.C. post. It
is unknown if this may connect to the Rotor bunker.
TRULEIGH HILL TQ 224 109 R3 BUNGALOW 1 LEVEL
The site is no longer an R.A.F. radar station, and is now used by the Home Office as a radio station.
The underground bunker does not appear to be in use as access is possible to part of it through the main air vent.
The main section of the bunker is inaccessible, being behind large double steel doors which are firmly closed.
ROTOR C.E.W STATIONS
INVERBERVIE NO 841 734 R3 BUNGALOW 1 LEVEL
The site is no longer an R.A.F. radar station. There is an U.S.N. microwave repeater station on the site,
but it does not appear to use any of the underground facilities. The bungalow has been maintained, however, in very
good condition.
COLD HESLEDON NZ R 3 BUNGALOW 1 LEVEL
The bungalow has been completely demolished. The only remaining features of the original site are the
small radar Scanner buildings, and a rectangular earth mound under which the main bunker would
have been positioned. Part of the site has been re-fenced and radio equipment has been installed
into a modified main air vent (top missing). It is uncertain if access is possible to the underground section
through this structure.
BEMPTON TA 192 736 R3 BUNGALOW TYPE 80 1 LEVEL
The site is no longer an R.A.F. radar station, and is now derelict. It would appear
that the station closed in the late 1960’s due to the opening of the new S.O.C. at Staxton Wold.
All radar equipment has been removed, and access is possible to the bungalow and a joining
underground bunker the overall condition of the site is poor.
TRIMINGHAM TG 290 385 R3 BUNGALOW TYPE 80 1 LEVEL
The site is no longer an R.A.F. radar station, and now appears to be privately owned. The
bungalow has been very well maintained, and has two additional windows fitted into the roof section.
All radar equipment has been removed, although there is a tall mast on the site. The local Post Office
telephone directory has an entry for the Civil Aviation Authority listed as Trimingham Radio Station.
If this is on the same site, this may well be the mast Previously mentioned.
ST MARGARETS TR 373 452 1 LEVEL
Site completely demolished. The grid reference given is the most likely site for the Rotor
building in the area, and would appear to be where it was positioned beside the existing Coastguard Station.
BEACHY HEAD TV 590 959 R3 BUNGALOW 1 LEVEL
The site is no longer an R.A.F. radar station, and has been converted for use as a Coast-Guard station.
All radar Scanners and buildings have been removed, and the air vents have been demolished.
There does not appear to be any access to the underground bunker, as the bungalow does not have
the usual garage section positioned at the rear. The only possible access point being a manhole cover
located 50yds east of the bungalow.
ROTOR SECTOR OPERATIONS CENTERS
KELVEDON HATCH TQ 561 994 R3 BUNGALOW 3 LEVEL METROPOLITAN
The site was closed as an S.O.C. when the S.O.C.s were located within the master Radar Stations.
The site was then kept on a care and maintenance basis until it was taken over by the Home Office
in the early 1960’s. The site is now S.R.H.Q. 51.
SHIPTON SE 542 618 R3 BUNGALOW 3 LEVEL NORTHERN
The site was closed when the S.O.C’s were located at the master Radar Stations. The site was then
taken over by the Home Office and possibly used as the Regional Seat of Government for Region 2.
The site has since been re-classified as S.R.H,Q. 2.1. And is currently being enlarged to 4 levels.
BAWBUBURGH TG 165 080 R3 BUNGALOW EASTERN
The site was closed when the S.O.C.s were located at the Plaster Radar Stations. The site has since
been taken over the Home Office as S.R.H.Q. 4.1. and has also been extensively enlarged, possibly to
four floors like Shipton.
LONGLEY LANE SO 539 364 WESTERN
The site appears to have never been fully completed for its original purpose, as the Western Sector
was disbanded in the early 1950’s. The underground bunker was, however, constructed and became
the Sector Headquarters for the Royal Observer Corp No 21 Group. The site is still maintained by the
R.O.C. It was thought during the early 1960’s that the site was a Regional Seat of Government, but
this seems unlikely.
BARNTON QUARRY NT 203 748 PURPOSE BUILT QUARRY BUILDING CALEDONIAN
The site was taken over from the Air Ministry by the Ministry of Public Buildings & Works in October
1961, and re-equipped as the Regional Seat of Government for Scotland. It has since been reclassified
as the Central Zone Head-Quarters for Scotland. The surface buildings are all of single story construction,
and largely made of brick. The bunker has been constructed inside what was once an open quarry, of
which the majority was then filled in covering the structure. Two 65 ft masts were erected in 1967,
which have the usual VHF/UHF communications aerials in place.
BOX ST 850 690 PURPOSE BUILT QUARRY BUILDING SOUTHERN
Site not positively identified, but is probably located at, under or near R.A.F. Rudloe Manor.
And what about the R numbers - whats that all mean?
